MISCELLANEOUS

We have not been able to locate Alexander and Elizabeth Holbrook in the 1860 or 1870 census, even using the new every name index available at Ancestry. We have searched using each name, including the unmarried children who would have been at home in those years. If anyone has a census for them in 1860 and 1870, please share with us!

Please visit our new partial History of Champaign County, Illinois . Alexander Holbrook was one of the first taxpayers listed, and also mentioned as one of the first ministers.

From History of Bureau County, by H.C. Bradsby, published by World Publishing Company, Chicago, 1885 page 177, "In 1833 Robert Scott became a resident of the settlement, and about the same time Martin Tompkins and Alexander Holbrook made claims near the east line of the county, where H. W. Terry now lives...."

Notes from Lynn Kappelmann: "Alexander was a Methodist preacher and it is said he lived on what is now Captain Howell's farm (in 1918) and often held meetings in the neighborhood sometimes riding a steer to his appointments - this was in the 1830's he was one of the first ministers in the area. Also they called him an exhorter and said he often made the woods ring with his wild eloquence. He settled claims of land in both Vermillion and Bureau Cos., IL along with the Tompkins and Coles. He is buried in Mt. Bloom Cemetery, Tiskilwa, IL.

Our Notes on Ft. Scott, Kansas and other thoughts:

In notes sent to us William A. Holbrook, Isaac Holbrook and Joseph W. Holbrook all died about 1875 in Ft. Scott, Kansas. You can locate Ft. Scott on any map, in Bourbon County, Kansas. Located along the far eastern border of Kansas, it cannot be but a few miles from the Missouri border and perhaps 25 or 30 miles from Nevada City, Missouri which was the nearest post office listed in the 1870 census where the three men lived in Missouri - "1870 US CENSUS, Nevada City PO, Henry Twp, Vernon County, MO" - see census below for each man. We have not been given any explanation for the deaths of these men. And we believe that Joseph W. Holbrook did not die in 1875, as we believe we have found him in 1880 in Vernon County, MO (see below). At first I questioned what brought them to Ft. Scott in 1875. Once I realized, however, the close proximity to where they were living, there are many explanations.

There is a photo taken February 18, 1874 in Bureau County, Illinois by H.W. Immke. It is labeled the William A. Holbrook Group. You can order a copy of the photo from the Bureau County Historical Society by contacting them behsmuseum@yahoo.com . The photograph is of six men, one of which must be William A. Holbrook. On the back of the photo, Mr. Immke has written William A. Holbrook as the person who ordered the photo, the date of the photo (or order?), and "Ft. Scott Kansas" as the address to send it to Mr. William A. Holbrook. Many people have presumed this meant that William lived in Ft. Scott. I am not convinced. Ft. Scott may very well have been the main town where they shopped, caught the train etc, and received mail. The census says the nearest post office to him in 1870 was Nevada City, Missouri. This would have been the nearest town within Vernon County, Missouri. If they lived at the western side of Vernon County, Ft. Scott would have been quite a bit closer and more convenient. Just a thought.

I have seen the photo, and it is my opinion that it is probably six of the seven surviving brothers. One of them bears a striking resemblance to Martin Tompkins (born 1809) who would have been an uncle to the Holbrook boys. Keeping that in mind, however, there were other close Tompkins relatives in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas at that time - perhaps a photo of a family reunion at some event in February 1874 in Bureau County?

Of course, curiosity asks the question as well - who died in or near Ft. Scott Kansas in 1875 and from what cause?
